A lone house along Honokohau Bay sustained $679,000 in damage following a fire Thursday night and early Friday morning, fire officials said.

Firefighters received the call at 9:21 p.m. Thursday. The caller who reported the fire came across someone on Honoapiilani Highway near the bay, who said there was a house ablaze, said Fire Services Chief Ed Taomoto. The caller drove to an area with cellphone service to report the fire.

When crews arrived on scene at 9:39 p.m., about half of the 3,800 square foot single-story house was on fire, he said. The roof over part of the house had collapsed.

The fire was contained at 10:10 p.m. and extinguished at 2:30 a.m. Friday, Taomoto said. About 70 percent of the structure suffered damage.

There were no injuries. The home was dilapidated and appeared to have been vacant for awhile and was unsecured, Taomoto said. It is the only house on the makai side of Honoapiilani Highway at the bay.

The cause of the fire was undetermined. The damage to the structure was estimated at $679,000 with no contents of value lost, Taomoto said.

A crew from Napili and an engine, tanker and battalion chief from Lahaina responded to the fire.
